Language Arts
During the year students will learn to read while working on fluency and comprehension skills. Some comprehension skills we will address are predicting, visualizing, generalizing, sequencing, author’s purpose, character, cause and effect, main idea and supporting details, context clues, graphic sources, steps in a process, fact and opinion, theme, reality vs. fantasy, drawing conclusions and plot structure.
Children will periodically take a reading test called a “running record”. The goal is to have children reading at their instructional level as much as possible. Children’s report card scores will be a reflection of their reading level. Below are listed the goals for your child’s reading level for the end of each trimester.
1st Trimester Level E
2nd Trimester Level G
3rd Trimester Level I
Students will also work on paragraph writing. They will be responsible for a 5 sentence paragraph, including a topic sentence, 3 proof sentences and a feeling/conclusion sentence.
Math
Students will be working on addition, subtraction, place value, geometry, fractions, measurement, probability, money and time.
Science
First grade will learn many fun and interesting facts about living things, nutrition, weather and seasons and energy.
Social Studies
Students will cover many topics in Social Studies this year. These include All About Me, People at Work, Our World, Communities, American Celebrations and History of America.
