READING – PHONICS – LANGUAGE ARTS
Our language arts curriculum is provided by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Story Town. Story Town provides thorough support and instruction for meeting the Common Core State Standards. Our students will receive instruction in the areas of reading, fluency, writing, speaking and listening, and language.
Reading: Reading instruction includes a balance of award winning, classic, and favorite literature selections. Decoding, comprehension, reference and study skills, literature, vocabulary, and language skills are stressed. Your child will participate in whole group instruction and in small guided reading groups. This provides the opportunity for each child to read at his/her instructional level.
Phonics: In phonics the students will learn about short and long vowels, consonants, blends, digraphs, dipthongs, contractions, suffixes, prefixes, synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms.
Spelling: Spelling words are provided by a combination of Story Town and The Sitton Spelling Series focusing on spelling patterns and high frequency words.
English: The second-grade curriculum includes grammar, sentence mechanics, and composition. Instruction is provided by Story Town and additional supplementary materials may be used.
MATH
The district uses a math series called Everyday Mathematics developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project. Students work on addition and subtraction, number patterns, place value, time, money, measurement, geometry, fractions, pre-multiplication and division skills, and problem solving.
SCIENCE
Second grade students will focus on Life Science and Physical Science.
SOCIAL STUDIES
The Social Studies Program was written by Pearson Education and is called My World Social Studies: We Do Our Part. Each chapter asks an essential question and then provides a larger framework to guide students and help them see the big idea of each chapter.
